Dr. Cool recovery wrap review
Getting the opportunity to personally review the Dr. Cool Recovery wraps was a very exciting moment. Not only was I getting the chance to test a great product, I was getting a chance to finally escape the hassles of my regular icing routine.
When I first saw the Dr. Cool recovery wrap I thought that it looked awesome. And wouldn’t you know it; I immediately had an opportunity to run a test trial when I hurt my ankle in a pickup game. Lucky me, I guess.
Originally I did what I use to do which was grab a zip lock bag and fill it full of ice. This way, I got the exciting challenge of figuring out a way to balance the bag of ice on my ankle for as long as possible. I felt like I should be on a T.V. game show trying some impossible stunt because balancing that bag of ice was very difficult.
The problems with injury recovery
It is inevitable that you are going to be injured at some point in time and there is nothing you can do to completely avoid it. Sure injuries can be extremely painful sometimes, but being an athlete, that is not necessarily what you are worried about.
The real fear is about not knowing when you are going to be able to play again. It’s something that every athlete has nightmares about. Standing on the sideline and watching your team play sucks. You can’t do anything to help.
The better you care for your injury the quicker you heal. But as you and I know, caring for your injury, especially icing it, is a pain in the butt. Let’s take a look at why.
Ice drips everywhere
Every time I try to use a bag of ice, I become more concerned with cleaning up the mess, rather than icing my injury. And I know I am not the only one who feels this way.
Think of the last time that you used a bag filled with ice from the trainer. Every time you have to set it down, it leaves a puddle of water. Getting water on everything is not only inconvenient but it’s messy and a nuisance to deal with.
Interruptions to your icing routine are what make it ineffective and in turn increases your recovery time. The last thing you want as a lacrosse player is to have to wait longer to be on the field.
Icing while elevating: the great balancing act
I am sure you have heard of the term R.I.C.E. This acronym stands for rest, ice, and compress and elevate. The first problem that arises with conventional ice methods is that elevating while icing can be very troublesome.
Trying to strap a bag of ice to your ankle and balance it is not as easy as it seems. I have run into this problem countless times where it seemed that whatever I did, the ice was not going to stay on my injury.
This can be extremely annoying and painful to deal with. Not to mention you run the risk of not icing the correct spot which can reduce its effectiveness.
Compression can be painful with ice
Another problem that arises with recovery is compression. When you ice your injury, one thing you want to do is make sure that the swelling recedes.
For athletes, this is very important because the faster the swelling goes down, the faster your doctor clears you and the faster you get back out on that field.
Oftentimes, attempting to compress ice onto your injury can be painful. I know that for me, it feels like somebody is trying to massage my injury with a bag of hard rocks.
You can see how this would be tough for somebody to bear, even considering that these are tough athletes complaining about the pain.
Ice is square, but my joints are round
It is common sense that using ice cubes in a bag is not 100 percent effective at covering every square inch of the injury. When you hold the bag of ice on your ankle, or wherever your injury may be, there will be areas that will not be iced as well as others.
Sometimes you might get the orientation just right and your injury will receive the icing it deserves. But then the ice melts and the bag moves. Mostly your injury will not receive the proper coverage it needs and this can really affect how quickly the swelling goes down.
You can’t rest when you’re uncomfortable
An important part of the R.I.C.E. acronym is rest. Proper rest is important, and without it your recovery time is sure to be slower. But if you’re like me, rest is nearly impossible when you're uncomfortable.
It's so difficult to balance a bag of hard ice on an already tender injury and relax at the same time. After only a couple of minutes the ice will shift and you'll have to catch it and rebalance it. Even if you tape it to yourself it'll shift.
Sometimes you miss the bag and water spills everywhere giving you a nice mess to clean. Sometimes you forget about your injury and your sudden movement aggravates it. Hardly relaxing!
Introducing: the Dr. Cool Recovery Wrap
The Dr. Cool recovery wrap is the first product to combine ice and compression in one flexible wrap.
The wrap is made of 95% polyamide and 5% spandex and introduces their own patented “Coolcore” technology. This technology helps the chemical free fabric stay cooler longer when it is used for cooling, compression therapy.
The fabric is also extremely flexible and can be tightened to perfect compression in order to help reduce the swelling of any injuries you may come across in a game.
Check out some of the great benefits of the Dr Cool wrap.
Ridiculously easy to use
Preparing the wrap for use is super easy and can be done in 3 easy steps.
- Wet the blue fabric on the inside of the wrap
- Put it in the freezer for at least 20 minutes
- Wrap whatever is hurting!
As soon as you feel the cooling wearing off, throw it back in the freezer for another 15 minutes then re-apply.
Comparing this to shoveling ice into a Ziploc bag over and over again, the Dr. Cool Wrap is extremely easy to use.
No more drips!
Using the Dr. Cool Wrap is awesome because there is virtually no mess! The wrap is absorbent so there is no dripping water or any mess you have to clean up after icing.
Ice on the other hand is a total pain because as we discussed earlier, it drips, EVERYWHERE!
No more dealing with melting bags of ice. The Dr. Cool Wraps absorbent technology converts the water in to a cooling sensation.
Icing while elevating
Icing & elevating with the Dr. Cool wrap is super easy. The wrap is attached firmly to your joint so you are free to rest in any position. You can even adjust your position without it falling off.
No more having to balance ice on an elevated joint. The Dr. Cool Wrap completely solves this problem.
Consistent compression around the injury
As an athlete, you know that using compression to reduce the swelling is very important for your recovery. With the Dr. Cool Wrap, you have consistent compression from the moment you fit it until you take it off.
There have been many times where I’ve tried to strap a bag of ice to my knee with cellophane tape. You get one shot at it and you never get the tightness right.
For me, the adjustable compression the Dr. Cool Wrap offers is comparable to winning the Super Bowl. I love it. The Dr. Cool Wrap is easy to put on and if it’s too loose or too tight, you can easily adjust it.
All round, targeted icing
With the Dr. Cool Wrap, you can be sure that you will receive icing on and around the spot that needs it. Using the ice wrap compared to using a bag of ice is like playing a sports video game vs. playing it in real life; it’s just not the same thing.
With the Dr. Cool Wrap, icing the correct spot efficiently is as easy as pie. Don’t settle for a bag full of cold rocks; go for the comfortable, cool, easy to use athletic wrap.
Portable and reusable
No more grabbing endless bags to fill with ice. You can reuse the Dr. Cool Wrap again and again.
If you want, get two of them and alternate them to help share the work load that sports takes on your body. Dr. Cool Wraps roll up into a small, light and portable solution to your injuries.
Different wrap sizes to suit all joints
The different sizes available for the Dr. Cool Wrap make it so you can ice all parts of your body no problem at all. Smaller sizes are great for ankles and wrists while larger sizes are better for back, thighs and your torso.
The Dr. Cool Wrap comes in three sizes that cater for any type of joint injury. There is a 3”x25”, 4”x40”, and a 6”x50” wrap.
For the small wrap I personally like to use it for my wrists and ankles. The medium sized wrap is perfect for knees and arms. And finally the biggest size wrap is perfect for back aches and shoulder pains.
For lacrosse, I think having a medium sized one for your arms while having a larger sized one for your back and shoulders is optimum. That way, getting back on the field after being slashed all over is easier than ever before.
Machine washable
The Dr. Cool Recovery Wrap is machine washable. You can put them in a wash cycle up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit and tumble dry on low power. Do not use chlorine bleach, fabric softener or an iron.
Summary
The Dr. Cool Wrap is incredibly versatile. It can ice anywhere on your body with cool easy compression, no problem.
Having a Dr. Cool recovery wrap on hand in the freezer allows you to recover fast and effectively. It beats conventional icing methods in all aspects of the RICE method.
The Dr. Cool Wrap comes in 8 different colors that can fit any personality including black, blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red and yellow.
