SISU mouth guard review
I was recently given the opportunity to test out one of SISU’s (http://www.sisuguard.com/) new mouth guards. I’d gotten word that one was on the way and literally the next day an “Aero” (http://www.sisuguard.com/aero-guard/) arrived on my doorstep.
I’ll tell you now that I was really looking forward to reviewing a mouth guard. I have worn a mouth guard all my life in Lacrosse but I have yet to be impressed.
Why mouth guards have sucked for so long
The main problem with conventional mouth guards these days is that they don’t seamlessly integrate with your game. They just get in the way. These are some of the main problems I have with them.
You can’t talk
When I am on the field I like to talk, direct traffic and set up different offensive motion. With regular conventional mouth guards, especially the ones that are attached to your helmet, this doesn’t work so well.
First of all, I sound like an idiot. Every time I open my mouth to call an offense, out comes some garbled mush that my team mates have the pleasure of deciphering. Not to mention that every time I talk in the huddle I end up spitting all over my teammates.
They move with your helmet, not your head
Even during the match, when I move my head too hard, the rubber strap that connects the mouth guard to the facemask pulls upward causing the mouth guard to partially dislodge. Not only is this really annoying, but renders the mouth guard completely useless and unsafe until I get rid of the ball and can readjust it. And as you all know trying to refit a mouth guard withyour lacrosse gloves on isn’t easiest thing in the world. Nor is it the tastiest.
They impede your breathing
When I’m out of breath, I have to take my mouth guard out. A loose piece of plastic in my mouth makes it really difficult to gulp down air. If I don’t take it out, it’ll fall into that spot which briefly cuts off my air supply, causing me to choke and lurch violently.
You can’t drink with them
Well, you can take it to the bar, but that’s not what I’m talking about. Something as simple as having a drink is difficult with a conventional mouth guard. But SISU has innovated a way to re-hydrate with your mouth guard still in your mouth.
With conventional mouth guards when I run to the sideline to get a quick drink of water, more runs down my shirt than I actually consume. And I really hate is when the stream hit’s the mouth guard and sprays everywhere. Yeah, that’s fun.
Out of sight, out of mind
If you ask a laxer to list their gear, they won’t mention their mouth guard. When I’m getting ready for the season I usually spend most of my money on the cool things like new cleats, heads, helmet etc. A mouth guard is definitely the last thing I worry about.
It’s only during the first practice, when you put last years’ moldy one in your mouth do you think you need a new one. At that stage, all you want is something not moldy so you get the cheapest from the local sporting goods store.
But you have to wear a mouth guard
You all know that everyone on your team would rather play without a mouth guard than play with one in. But not having a mouth guard means that you are leaving yourself vulnerable to injury. You don’t want to start looking like half of the professional hockey population with several teeth missing.
You also don’t want your jaw getting knocked loose during a collision. This can cause you serious head trauma giving you a concussion and even sometimes causing you to lose consciousness.
The solution: The SISU mouth guard
The SISU mouth guard is a perfect combination of comfort, innovation and protection. SISU has created a mouth guard that gives you the ability to experience the game on a whole other level. Talking, breathing and drinking is now easier than ever thanks to SISU’s new innovative mouth guard.
Excellent Protection
The Aero SISU mouth guard is 1.6 mm thick which is about 50% thinner than conventional mouth guards. It’s made from their revolutionary “Diffusix” technology which is a new high-tech thermoplastic material that is 30% stronger and has 8x the tensile strength of conventional mouth guards. Tensile strength is the maximum stress that a material can withstand before breaking while being pulled or stretched.
The perforations within the mouth guard, interestingly, help strengthen it. When an impact occurs, they oscillate to help disperse the energy to special crumple zones away from your teeth. It’s very similar to how support system for a bridge work.
You can be very sure that any collision you face on the field can be safe if you have a SISU in your mouth. This mouth guard will increase your confidence and ensure that when you make contact, your opponent will be on the ground and not your teeth.
Fully customized mold to your teeth
As you see in the pictures, the SISU mouth guard is shipped to you completely flat, ready to be custom molded to your teeth. Following SISU’s molding process, it is molded to not only your bite, but also to the front and back of your teeth. This personalized fit is not only more comfortable, but helps the mouth guard perform at its best.
As far as the molding process goes it is very simple and can be done in a few minutes. With most other mouth guards you get one shot at it. But if you make a mistake with the SISU you can easily remold it. You just heat it up, flatten it out and try again.
And one nice benefit is it doesn’t leave a horrible taste in your mouth. It’s nice to know you’re not consuming your mouth guard while molding it.
No attachments required; it stays in by itself
The great thing about SISU’s custom molding process is that the mouth guard fits so well, it stays in all by itself. You don’t need a helmet attachments or anything like that. That alone is reason enough to get one. I hate those helmet straps.
You can breathe freely
I don’t know about you, but I like to breathe; especially when I’m exhausted. This is another area where the SISU really excels. The mouth guard has holes everywhere in the plastic so that when you need to catch your breath on the field, it is doable without having to take your mouth piece out.
Lacrosse is the fastest game on two feet and there is no time for you to take your mouth guard out to catch your breath. With the SISU, this problem is eliminated completely.
You can drink & talk while it’s fitted
I’ve been unimpressed with conventional mouth guards because they get in the way when you try to drink or talk. But it’s in this area where the SISU mouth guard really excels.
Because of its great fit and low profile, it gives you great protection while also allowing you to easily talk and drink. It’s something that I think most of us hadn’t thought was possible and SISU have delivered in spades.
Low maintenance requirements and long life
Just like all mouth guards, the SISU mouth guard will get dirty. So it is important that you wash rinse it off before using it and store it in a dirt proof container. You don’t want to be putting in a mouth guard that has been sitting at the bottom of your bag for half the season!
This is one tough mouth guard, and you shouldn’t have any problems with breaking it unless you run it over with your car. But just like anything, you need to take care of it to ensure its lifetime.
Heaps of colors
Last but not least, the SISU mouth guards come in 11 different colors including: pink, purple, dark blue, light blue, light green, yellow, orange, red, black, dark green and white.
This gives you the opportunity to customize and order a color that suits your team colors so your mouth guard looks as good as it performs.
Summary
I know there are other players out there who are tired of the same problems that conventional mouth guards propose. Ever since I started playing I have been dying to find something more comfortable to protect my teeth during play and now I have.
The SISU mouth guards are setting the standard for all mouth guards across the globe. After forming and shaping the SISU mouth guard to your mouth you’ll realize how comfortable to the guard actually is. For me, it felt like that it was a part of my body. I almost forgot I was wearing it.
Being able to drink and breathe like normal while having the SISU mouth guard in your mouth is something that no other mouth guard has been able to replicate. Every Lacrosse player knows that when you’re on the field there is no time to spend to fiddle around with your mouth guard. With the SISU, it eliminates this problem and also gives you many features and benefits that conventional mouth guards skip over.
SISU pays attention to the details, and to me that means I can finally rely on a brand of mouth guard that will be essential to the rest of my career on the field.
I am confident that all of my mouth guard problems have been defeated by the SISU mouth guard. The second I put this mouth guard in I knew that it could help me perform on the field. SISU seems to have all the answers to the problems that arise with mouth guards.
SISU mouth guards have a yearlong warranty that covers damage to teeth when in compliance to the instructions.
